This past weekend we visited a small organic dairy farm to pick up some fresh milk.
The farmer’s wife gave us a tour and introduced us to their friendly Jersey and Holstein (think Chick-fil-A!) cows and calves.
Talk about happy and contented cows…this place was nothing like a typical dairy farm where the animals are crammed together on a dirt lot, and injected with hormones to increase milk production and antibiotics to control disease. This 125 acre farm was full of lush green pastures where the cows are free to roam.
Each day, the farmer goes out to the field to call his herd and they quickly trot over for their morning milking. Then it’s back out to the field for more grazing and relaxation. What a life!
The calves are kept in a pen to keep them from walking under the single electric wire bordering the property and exploring in the road or the neighbor’s flower garden. The farmer’s wife introduced us to each of them by name, and they walked over curious to meet their new visitors.
After the tour, we loaded our milk in a cooler and headed home for some fresh homemade ice cream!
I used an egg-free honey sweetened ice cream recipe.
It was amaaazing.
So thick and creamy!
The kids had a great time licking the beaters, the spatula, and the bowl.
And so did I!
There’s nothing like fresh homemade ice cream, straight from the farm!
