When I was little, I loved helping my mom decorate the house for Christmas. We’d turn on some Amy Grant Christmas music while we strung lights on the tree and set up the manger scene. It was magical.
Now, I can see that same feeling in my kids when it’s time to get the Christmas decorations out. My house is filled with squeals of delight with every little decoration we pull out of the box. Kids make Christmas special.
Most of the Christmas decorations I have were given to me by family and friends. Some of my kids’ very favorite items are from my grandpa.
When my son was just a little tike, my grandpa started giving us animated decorations that wiggled or sang whenever you pushed their button. My son loved them. Probably a little too much because eventually one of the animated decorations, Frosty, broke.
I never threw Frosty out, though, which is remarkable since I really hate keeping useless junk around the house. But Frosty was special. So year after year I just set him out carefully and he would sit silently in a corner of the house somewhere.
Until this year.
My daughter noticed that Frosty had a button on his hand and that meant he should do something. We explained to her that Frosty was broken but she wouldn’t have it. She begged Daddy to fix Frosty saying, “I know you can fix him, Daddy!”
Not wanting to disappoint his little girl, my husband spent most of a Saturday tinkering away on Frosty. He was pretty sure Frosty was a hopeless case but guess what…
He wasn’t.
After many hours, Frosty was fixed!! We were all surprised but my daughter was thrilled.
Frosty is no longer sitting silently in a corner of the house. He’s singing and dancing to “Frosty the Snowman” and he even “melts” when the sun comes out. He’s really adorable. And we’re so glad he’s back!
Needless to say, one little girl is very fond of her father. <grins>
Somehow I never got around to buying a nativity for our home.
I should do that someday but for the past few years my mom has loaned me hers. It’s the same nativity as the one I grew up with.
It has a little music box built in it and the kids enjoy arranging all the people.
I have just a few other little decorations scattered around the living room.
This little snowman was given to me by a special family whose girls I used to babysit. We had some fun, silly, and giggly times together. Their parents must’ve been so disappointed in me. I was probably the worst babysitter ever, shooing those girls off to bed just minutes before their parents would get home. Those poor girls were staying up way too late!
My son really wanted a snow globe one year so a few years ago he received this cute little penguin guy.
He likes keeping his snow globe with him in his room.
This table runner is new to me this year! Isn’t it gorgeous?
I just ordered it from Seaside Stitchin’ at Etsy. It was affordable, beautifully quilted, and super cute. She has lots of cute pillows, throws, and table runners. And free shipping until Christmas, too!
This advent calendar for the kids is called Love Came Down, by Dayspring. I love it because it’s made of felt and it’s nice and sturdy, unlike the paper advent calendar I used to have that had been taped too many times to count.
The kids love to move the heart each day. It also serves as a nice reminder that we are counting down to Jesus’ birthday. The day when love came down to earth, for us!
So, that’s our home at Christmas time.
I’d love to see your home and your decorations, too. Or hear about your family Christmas traditions!
