It’s Saturday and a rain scented breeze is blowing through my open window. I hear rumblings in the distance. A storm is definitely rolling in. I say, bring it! It will be a welcome relief from the hundred degree heat we’ve been feeling this week.
A brand new Paleo cookbook bakebook by The Urban Poser hit the shelves this month. I’ve been following this Paleo blogger for awhile now. I love her Rustic Homemade Marshmallows and her Gingerbread Cake Donuts. If you haven’t yet, you gotta try ’em! I knew I’d love her cookbook, so I added it to my Amazon cart right away. But then I got to thinking…Paleo diets use so much almond flour. My daughter is allergic to nuts and I don’t want to buy an entire cookbook if I can only use a handful of the recipes. I decided I should look it over before buying it.
I was in town this past week and noticed a Barnes and Noble bookstore on the corner. What a great opportunity to peek at that cookbook before I bought it! I had the kids with me so we detoured to the kids’ section first and then to the cookbook section. Well, it was nowhere to be found. I was bummed. We headed back down the escalator to buy the books the kids had picked out.
Standing in line at the checkout, I saw it.
No, not my Paleo cookbook, but the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. It was right there top, front, and center. You couldn’t miss it if you wanted to. I quickly stood in front of my kids, hoping I could block their view of the inappropriate material. As soon as we got to the counter I slid a bunch of nearby magazines in front of it, checked out, and left.
It’s one thing to read about these things in the news, but quite another when you are face-to-face with it, with your children right beside you. Thanks a lot Barnes and Noble. And, unfortunately, it’s getting worse. When I learned about the Supreme Court’s decision to “redefine” marriage this week, it brought tears to my eyes. The culture is constantly telling us it’s no big deal what other people do with their lives, but I know what this means for my country, my family, and my children’s future. This decision affects each and every one of us, especially those of us who believe marriage is designed and instituted by God as a holy union solely between one man and one woman.
Canada legalized gay “marriage” 10 years ago and now “it’s considered discriminatory to say marriage is between a man and a woman. If someone catches and reports you uttering your bigoted, intolerant opinion, prepare to face tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees and sensitivity training.”- Chicks on the Right Will this happen in America? Probably not right away but we are well on our way down that path. I’m sure you’ve heard about the cake bakeries and the wedding photographers that are being sued for not providing services to non-traditional “marriages”. You lose your freedoms slowly. Bit by bit the government goes after them and then, before you know it, any reference to the natural, traditional family will be considered “hate speech”.
I never would have imagined that my freedom loving country would someday look like Canada and Europe. Yet, here we are. I’m reminded of a quote Benjamin Franklin made soon after signing the Constitution. A woman asked him, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” He replied, “A republic, Madam, if you can keep it.” And isn’t that the truth!
In a society that continues to turn away from God and does whatever is right in its own eyes, it’s easy to see that we are losing our republic. We’re losing our God given rights. We are losing the religious freedoms that this great country was once founded upon, all because a group of justices, that were not elected by “we the people”, took it upon themselves to make immorality law. John Adams stated, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” A republic just doesn’t work in a godless immoral society. And we can see the truth of that today.
I hope this unconstitutional ruling will act as a wake up call to all freedom loving Americans. We are still the United States of America, land of the FREE. Freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of religion… We can’t just give up, lay down, and let our freedoms be taken from us. If we don’t stand up, stand tall, and fight for our freedoms now, we won’t have any freedoms left to pass on to our children.
I think my friend Megan said it perfectly in her recent post, “We live in a constitutional republic. A Republic does not just give us the right to voice our opinion, it gives us sovereignty over it and our choices.” Amen!
It’s so tempting to become discouraged and give up. But let’s keep our chin up. Let’s pray for America. Let’s stand together and fight for our precious republic. The future of our country and the future of our children depends on it. It’s worth fighting for.
