“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
Bible verse memorization does not come easily to me. I have never been good at memorizing anything. In fact, I’m one of those people who forgets someone’s name almost immediately after being introduced. It’s embarrassing!
This last year I realized that scripture memorization was something that I really wanted to work on regardless of my memorization skills. I wanted to have verses on the tip of my tongue. I wanted them to be fresh in my mind. I wanted to be able to easily recall exact verses in their entirety, not just the general idea of the verse.
We decided to work on Scripture memorization as a family. I created a chart with a few different Bible verses and put it up on the fridge where we could all see it everyday.
The verses I chose touched on character traits that we were working on such as obeying, lying, loving one another, anger, and fear.
What I discovered was that kids are great at memorization! My son took off and memorized all the verses better and faster than the rest of us.
After we had memorized all the verses and could recite them to each other, we celebrated with a family campout in the living room. My son loved it! I have to admit, though, I snuck away to bed after a couple of hours because sleeping on the floor was unbearable. I like my soft squishy bed. I can’t
live sleep without it. (Note to Hubby: If I can’t handle a living room “camp out”, adding a tent, cold air, no running water, and bears into the equation will prove disastrous.)
