My son is a gigantic fan of Dave Stotts’ Drive Thru History videos. We have several of his DVDs and we love them. They’re funny, educational, and just a whole lot of fun. What a great way to learn and experience history, right?! Well, guess what? Now we can experience the story of Jesus in the same way!
Drive Thru History
“The Gospels”, with Dave Stotts, tells the story of Jesus straight from the land of Israel. We get to travel along with Dave Stotts, in his 1976 Land Rover, and experience the places that Jesus lived and travelled, such as the Sea of Galilee, the city of Bethlehem, the place where Jesus would’ve given the Sermon on the Mount, as well as more than 50 beautiful and breathtaking sites. These videos help viewers to “see” the Bible in a whole new way while also giving evidence of the truth of the Bible.
“The Gospels” includes a set of three DVDs along with a study guide that includes scripture references and discussion questions about each episode. The videos include 18 episodes that are 30 minutes each. This series covers history, archaeology, geography and so much more. Dave does his best to harmonize the Gospel accounts and present them in chronological order.
Thoughts and Usage
Studying the Bible can be fascinating because there are so many details that are easy to miss when you’re just reading through a chapter. However, as you study, you learn things that you had never noticed before, and you can get a glimpse of how everything ties together from God’s majestic creation to his wonderful plan to save us from our sins.
You probably have mental images of what things were like in the areas where Jesus grew up and had his ministry. However, if you’re like me and have never had a chance to visit Israel for yourself, this Drive Thru History series really helps change those mental images to more accurately picture what it would have been like for Jesus and those around him.
We enjoyed watching the episodes together as a family, and all four of us, including my 12 year old son and 6 year old daughter, thoroughly enjoyed the videos. Dave Stotts is funny and quirky. The humor he adds throughout the video series kept my kids engaged and enjoying each episode. Without the personality he adds to his videos, I know my kids would not have been as interested.
After each episode, we went through the study questions for that episode together. Some of the questions were a little difficult or confusing, but it gave us a good opportunity to discuss what we learned together.
My favorite part of the series was seeing footage of the places discussed in the Gospel accounts. The series also includes a lot of artwork depicting various events in the Gospels. Some of it was interesting, but I would have preferred that the videos have more live footage and less art. Also, some of the art had images, such as battle scenes, that were a little disturbing to the kids.
One of my favorite episodes showed the amazing architectural feats of Herod the Great. I knew he had made a lot of very impressive buildings, but I had no idea that he had built his own mountain with a palace on top that towered over all of the surrounding countryside. I also didn’t realize how wicked Herod was, and it helps explain how Joseph and Mary must have felt when they fled to Egypt with Jesus.
Overall, we are quite impressed with this new video series! We love them! My kids will even ask to watch the videos. I’d definitely recommend this series for kids and adults alike as a fun and informative way to learn about the events surrounding Jesus’ life on earth and gain new understanding to the familiar Gospel accounts.
