We’ve had a wonderful couple of weeks off for Christmas and I must say it’s hard to get back into a routine, but here it is…my first review of 2017!
Over our Christmas break we had the chance to review The Beginner’s Bible from Zonderkidz. We were really excited to receive this children’s Bible. Homeschoolers love their books and we are no different! Although we already own several different children’s Bibles, we were excited to see how this one stacked up against the rest.
The Beginner’s Bible
The Beginner’s Bible we received is the brand new updated 2016 version that is available now. The older version had flat clip art type images outlined with dark lines. The new version has all new illustrations featuring more appealing 3D images that really pop off the page. Geared towards children ages 4-8, The Beginner’s Bible is chock full of color, fun (and sometimes even silly) pictures, and, of course, lots of classic Bible stories.
The Beginner’s Bible is a sturdy hardback book that will stand up to lots of wear and tear. With over 500 pages, The Beginner’s Bible includes 94 stories from the Old and New Testament. Stories included are some of the most exciting ones like: David and Goliath, Daniel and the Lions, Jonah and the Big Fish, Baby Jesus is Born, Jesus Walks on Water, Lazarus Lives Again, and Jesus is Coming. There’s even a little dictionary in the back of the book containing words youngsters may not have heard before like: altar, baptize, miracle, or Sabbath.
The stories are short, only a few pages in length with large clear typeface. I really like that the scripture reference is provided under the title of each story. So, if you want to read the full details of the entire story, you can always visit that scripture reference for more!
Thoughts and Usage
I used The Beginner’s Bible with my daughter, who is five. She absolutely loves this book without a doubt! Though my daughter already has an appreciation for books, I noticed her spending more time with this one than with others, probably because the stories are already familiar to her and she loves looking at the engaging pictures.
I read several stories to her from The Beginner’s Bible before bedtime. The stories are short and sweet, so they’re very easy to pick up and read before bed, even if it’s already past bedtime. My daughter always asked me to read more! The stories are told in a simple easy to understand way. Sometimes a particular story would peak my daughter’s interest and we would have a great little conversation afterwards, which was really fun!
Because my daughter has looked at this book so much and we’ve read more than half of it so far, she is very familiar with the stories and can even find a particular story on her own. During the Christmas eve church service a week ago, my daughter flipped right to the Christmas story all on her own. And I was very impressed that she remembered so many little details from the story, too, including why Mary and Joseph had to flee to Egypt. Wow!
My daughter’s favorite part of The Beginner’s Bible is the silly pictures. She loves this picture (below) of the frogs from the Ten Plagues story. She always giggles about the frog in the baby’s breakfast bowl!
We’re really happy with The Beginner’s Bible. It would be a great first Bible for little ones or for young readers, too. We definitely recommend this book! It has earned a special place on our shelf and I know it will be used for years to come.
